How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac
iPhone photos transferred to Mac arrive in HEIC format, which most websites, email clients and Windows apps cannot open. Converting them to JPG on macOS is fast and free — there are five built-in methods plus a one-click online converter that works in any browser. This guide covers Preview, the Photos app export, Finder Quick Actions, an Automator batch service, and our free HEIC to JPG converter (above). All methods preserve EXIF data and image quality, and the bulk methods can convert hundreds of HEIC files at once.
Convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPEG so they can be viewed anywhere.
Whether you're emailing a single iPhone photo to a Windows colleague, uploading HEIC files to a website that only accepts JPG, sending pictures to a print shop, sharing on a forum, or batch-converting an entire vacation library — this guide shows the fastest method for every situation. All five Mac methods are free and built into macOS Sonoma, Sequoia and earlier versions back to macOS Catalina (10.15).
Method 1 — Preview app (single or batch)
- Open the HEIC file in Preview (double-click)
- Go to File → Export…
- Set Format: JPEG and adjust quality slider
- Click Save
For batch: select multiple HEIC files in Finder, open all in Preview, then File → Export Selected Images…
Method 2 — Photos app export
- Open the Photos app and select the HEIC photos
- Go to File → Export → Export X Photos…
- Choose JPEG as Photo Kind
- Click Export and pick a destination
Method 3 — Finder Quick Action (Convert Image)
macOS Monterey and later include a built-in Quick Action.
- Right-click the HEIC file in Finder
- Choose Quick Actions → Convert Image
- Select JPEG and image size
- The JPG appears next to the original
Method 4 — Automator batch workflow
- Open Automator and create a new Quick Action
- Add Change Type of Images action and set type to JPEG
- Save as "HEIC to JPG"
- Right-click any HEIC folder → Quick Actions → HEIC to JPG
Method 5 — Online converter (no install)
- Drop your HEIC files into the converter at the top of this page
- JPG files are generated locally in your browser — they never leave your Mac
- Download individually or as a ZIP for batch jobs
Which method should you use?
- 1–5 photos quickly: Preview (Method 1)
- From Photos library: Photos export (Method 2)
- Right-click convenience: Quick Action (Method 3)
- Hundreds of files repeatedly: Automator (Method 4)
- Privacy / no app install: Online converter (Method 5)
How it works
- 1Drag your HEIC files into the converter above (or click to browse).
- 2Wait a moment while files are converted to JPG locally inside your browser — nothing uploads to a server.
- 3Adjust the JPG quality slider if needed (90% is recommended for photos).
- 4Download the JPG files individually or grab them all as a ZIP.
